A Very Lowkey BabyMoon in Cambria

Back in November, my husband and I decided to take a quick little trip up to Cambria. If you’re unfamiliar with where that is, it’s a seaside village on the West Coast (San Luis Obispo County) that’s a little less than 4 hours away from LA. While most people opt for tropical places, especially during the winter, I wanted something a little quiet and lowkey. I discovered Cambria on Instagram, through White Water Cambria, which is a beautiful lodge on Moonstone Beach. The lodge is honestly what sold me and because I was preoccupied trying to survive my first trimester, and just starting my second trimester at the time, I did not do any research on what Cambria had to offer. All I knew driving up there was that it was by the water, colder than LA and that there was an annual Christmas light festival that we wanted to go to. So what was Cambria really like?

The population of Cambria, according to Google (in 2000) is 5,555. Yes, it is small. There are outdoor activities to do but being pregnant and it being cold, I decided to spend most of our time there indoors. My husband took advantage of the fresh air though, and would run or walk in the mornings on the boardwalk that was across our lodge. Seeing that we were only staying two nights, we did try to explore around the town, visiting the local shops and eating at the restaurants there. The food is good but it is also a bit pricey (to us). The options are quite limited as well and some places do require reservations.

The Elephant seals are a popular thing to see and are either on the way or a little past Hearst Castle, which is about 12 miles from the town. We opted out of visiting both of these and instead stayed in town to enjoy the Christmas light festival, which also gets sold out quickly. We were lucky to score some tickets at the door. The lights were beautiful and we had a great time, so I do recommend doing that if you’re there during wintertime. Aside from eating and shopping, and taking in the beautiful views of the ocean, there wasn’t much for me to do. We saw that there was a cat shelter in town and made a little visit over to support them by playing with the adoptable cats and buying a few things to take back home to our fur babies. Honestly, this probably gave me the most joy.

As for our lodge, the lobby is very well known on Instagram, and I’m sure you’ve seen pictures of it already. The decor in there is stunning and the staff is also amazing. Our room was pretty spacious with a fireplace, walk-in closet, vanity area, and king-size bed. My favorite thing about our stay was that every morning, the lodge delivers a picnic basket of fresh local pastries, hot coffee, and orange juice to your door. Overall, we had a cozy stay and would book again, but maybe with an oceanfront view next time.

Cambria may be an odd choice for a babymoon, but for a couple who has traveled a lot in the last decade, we wanted to just stay local and lowkey. We knew that after this, things would get chaotic as we prepare for the baby, and it has been. So I’m glad we got to do a short and sweet trip away before getting into full nesting mode.

Regardless of where you go, I do recommend taking a babymoon. It’s a great way to refocus and recenter on just you two, be able to pause before the changes come, and who doesn’t enjoy going on vacation? Take the babymoon.
