How to Reset Yourself After Being Stuck in a Rut

It’s no secret that life has its ups and downs, and along with it comes a rollercoaster of emotions, a downward spiral of emotions, and that feeling of just being stuck. Sure, we can blame Mercury Retrograde (which is currently happening) but we know that we honestly only have ourselves to blame. Things that happen to us and because of us, whether it is in our control or not, will affect how motivated we feel. So allow yourself to feel whatever it is you need to feel, take your time, and when you’re ready, here are some ways I like to reset myself after being in a rut.

1.Turn my morning and nightly routine into a checklist. Making the bed, cooking myself breakfast or making a smoothie, washing my hair, and making coffee are all simple things I do daily. The trick here is to give yourself that motivational push to go beyond this by crossing them off a list. There’s something about checking something off a list that gives you a sense of accomplishment, even if it’s something as small as throwing the trash away. It encourages me to keep going and yes, it is essentially just giving yourself props/applause for doing the bare minimum but sometimes, the bare minimum is enough.

2. I’m sure you’ve read it before but let me go ahead and repeat it again - move your body. Stretch, go for a walk or run, and/or work out. Moving your body not only gets the blood flowing, but it’ll give you that boost of energy you need. I also love adding in a quick 10-15 minute meditation (simply searching meditation music on Youtube and blasting it), while I sit in a lotus position on my favorite chair, eyes close and focusing on my breathing. This will be a great way to calm your mind and refocus after moving your body.

3. Socialize. Yes, you may feel like this is the last thing you want to do because you don’t want to talk to anyone but it can help - a lot. We’re humans and we need human interaction so call up your best friend for dinner. Allow yourself to vent if needed/you want to, but of course, ask to ensure that the other person can hold space for you while doing this. You can also choose to just have fun and not think about any of your worries. It’s not running away from your problems, it’s allowing yourself to be present and just focus on the fact that you can enjoy this moment. You are allowed to do this and you are allowed to return to your worries the next day if you wish. Also, I don’t know about you, but I always enjoy a good excuse to dress up and shed the 3-day old pajamas so I can feel human again.

4. Practice gratitude, twice. Write down 3 things you’re thankful for when you wake up and write down 3 things you are happy about before you go to bed. Appreciating all the little things in life will allow you to open your heart and in turn, help change your mood just a bit.

5. Lastly, get enough sleep! It is easier to focus when you’re not sleepy and lack of sleep certainly affects your mood, so get in enough of those ZZZ’s.
